More Hermetic , less Political

It is cold, windy and grey – a typical day in Hamburg. I'm supposed to meet Chiara in Sternstraße because I want to show her a new coffee hotspot. I have been waiting for my cell phone to ring for about 20 minutes. "Where do I have to go?" Chiara asks me, clearly irritated. I direct Chiara into a little side street in the Schanze, where my currently favorite store is situated. You have to know where you are going in order to find the small shop, but I assure you, it is worth it. Originally, the so-called "Less Political" was an art project. A blend between an art gallery and a café, but the coffee was so good that the focus was soon directed towards good coffee – luckily! You have known me for a while now, so you can probably guess, that they also serve Specialty Coffee. What I know about Specialty Coffee? – a lot about coffee I have taught you, my young Padawans.

Es ist kalt, windig und grau – ein typischer Tag in Hamburg also. Ich bin in der Sternstraße mit Chiara verabredet. Ich wollte ihr doch noch einen Kaffeehotspot zeigen. Allerdings warte ich schon seit 20 Minuten als mein Handy klingelt. „Wo ist das jetzt?“, fragt Chiara hörbar irritiert. Ich habe Chiara in eine kleine Seitenstraße in der Schanze gelotst, wo mein derzeitiger Lieblingsladen ist. Man muss das Ziel schon kennen, um den kleinen Laden zu finden, aber ich verspreche euch, es lohnt sich! Ursprünglich war das „Less Political“ ein Kunstprojekt. Eine Mischung aus Galerie und Café war das Ziel. Doch der Kaffee kam so gut an, dass der Fokus bald mehr auf die Verbreitung von gutem Kaffee gelegt wurde – zum Glück! Ihr kennt mich ja nun schon eine Weile, deshalb könnt ihr euch vermutlich schon denken, dass auch hier Specialty Coffee ausgeschenkt wird. Was soll ich euch noch zu Specialty Coffee erzählen – viel beigebracht über Kaffee ich euch schon habe, junge Padawane.

The team came up with the name "Less Political" by coincidence and as a result of a long night of drinking. They no longer use the name, due to their focus shifting towards their fantastic coffee. That's why there is a new name that decorates the door of the small coffee shop: Hermetic Coffee Roasters.

Der Name „Less Political“ kam dem Team des Kunstprojekts mehr per Zufall in einer langen durchzechten Nacht. Der Name ist aber längst nicht mehr Programm, das ist nämlich eindeutig Kaffee, deswegen steht nun schon ein neuer Name an der Tür zu dem kleinen Kaffeespace: Hermetic Coffee Roasters.

I’m afraid the explanation of hermeticism from Mika - one of the founders of the project - quickly vanished from my memory. (Note to self: take more notes).

In my defense, I was mentally distracted by the tonka bean flatwhite I had to - and was allowed to try. And it's fantastic! There is also a selection of other natural (!) aromas that you can enjoy in your coffee - I can only recommend trying something new!

Zugegeben, die Erklärung zu Hermetik von Mika – einer der Gründer des Projekts – hat sich dann doch recht schnell in Luft aufgelöst in meinem Kopf. (Notiz an mich selbst: Mehr
Notizen machen) Zu meiner Verteidigung: ich war geistig abgelenkt von dem Tonkabohnen-Flatwhite, den ich probieren musste – und durfte. Und er ist großartig! Es gibt auch noch andere natürliche (!) Aromen, die man in seinem Kaffee genießen kann – um was neues zu probieren kann ich das nur empfehlen!

A bit of mystery, a bit of alchemy and a lot of talent and love for detail and coffee make a good (hermetic?) cocktail. And coffee roasts, which are this delicious, could be referred to as hermetic art!

Ein bisschen Geheimnis, ein bisschen Alchemie und eine Menge Talent und Liebe zum Detail und zu Kaffee ergeben zusammen doch einen guten (hermetischen?) Cocktail. Und bei Kaffeeröstungen, die so lecker sind, geht das als Hermetische Kunst durch!

But let's get down to the main attraction: COFFEE!

Behind the counter today is Arndt (photo), who conjures up beautiful and tasty coffee and always has a smile on his face - that makes the coffee taste even better. As an ex-barista, I was mainly fascinated by the foot pedals used to operate the milk nozzle of the portafilter coffee machine. So much so that I didn't dare to try it myself :D What makes the Hermetic Coffee Roasters Café so special is its atmosphere. There are only a few seats inside, but it is still very cozy. The shelf-wall made of fruit boxes not only offers coffee accessories but is also Instagram-worthy in itself! The shop boasts many woody and earthy tones, is bright and warm and therefore attracts many coffee hipsters - yes, I said it and I mean it, I am one myself!

In the summer you can also sit outside at cute tables and enjoy your coffee in the sun (haha!) as wells as some delicious sweets. Today we will stay in my little café hiding place and repress the rain and cold as best we can.

Nun aber zum Wesentlichen: KAFFEE!

Hinter dem Tresen zaubert uns heute Arndt (Foto) schönen und leckeren Kaffee, und hat dabei immer ein Lächeln im Gesicht – da schmeckt der Kaffee gleich noch besser. Mich als alten Barista hat am meisten die Fußpedale, mit der die Milchdüse der Siebträgermaschine bedient wird, fasziniert. So sehr, dass ich mich nicht getraut habe sie auszuprobieren :D Was das Café der Hermetic Coffee Roasters so besonders macht, ist die Atmosphäre. Es gibt Innen nur wenige Plätze, dafür ist es aber sehr gemütlich. Die Regalwand aus Obstkisten bietet nicht nur Kaffeezubehör an, sondern ist ansich auch schwer Instagram würdig! Der Laden trumpft auf mit vielen Holz- und Erdtönen, ist gleichzeitig hell und warm und lockt ganz viele Kaffeehipster an – ja, ich hab's gesagt und ich mein es auch so, ich bin ja selbst einer!

Im Sommer kann man auch an schnuckeligen Tischen draußen sitzen und Kaffee, Sonne (haha!) und auch leckere Süßigkeiten genießen. Für heute bleiben wir in meinem kleinen Café-Versteck und verdrängen Regen und Kälte so gut es geht.
